Public Relations Models

Phineas Taylor Barnum (hype and press agentry)- attracting the attention of people and press. An example of this would be an event, such as a charity event to bring attention to a cause and to get positive attention from press.  Ivy Lee (facts and info)-  Using PR as a means to spread factual information to people. An example of this would be in the government, such as when the president gives a speech about factual affairs.  Edward Bernays (scientific persuasion)-  Corporate interests are the most important in terms of public relations persuasion. An example of this would be certain advertisements that convince you to buy something even though it may not be as great as described. Arther W. Page (mutual understanding)- a form of communicating to negotiate with the public and promote mutual benefits. In Class Activity

1. Pop culture portrays PR as something that alters the truth and that the jobs they are doing are all luxurious. They portray them as somewhat evil and that they are always out to make people look bad, and can be easily manipulated to make someone look good. 2. Some ideas to change the perspective of PR are to 1. educate people on what PR professionals actually do to avoid the stereotypes put on media. 2. Spread the word that positive campaigns and displays on social media are also PR. We can all improve the publics understanding of PR by educating ourselves and therefore educating others.
